10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Videographer Before You Book
Most couples have never hired a wedding videographer before. That’s not a problem in itself, but it does mean there are things worth asking that you might not think to. Here are the ten that matter most.
1. Can I watch a full wedding film?
Almost every videographer has a highlights reel. Three minutes of beautiful shots cut to music takes considerable skill to produce. What a full film tells you and a highlights reel doesn’t is whether they can hold a narrative together, how they handle quieter moments, and what their audio sounds like when the ceremony isn’t going perfectly to plan. Ask for a full film before you commit.
2. What does the package actually include?
Get this in writing. At minimum, a package should include a highlights film, uncut ceremony footage, and uncut speeches. Those are the three things couples consistently want to watch back. If any of them are missing, ask why, and factor it into your decision.
3. How do you record audio?
This one gets overlooked more than it should. A videographer relying solely on their camera’s built-in microphone is unlikely to capture clean audio in a church, a marquee, or anywhere with ambient noise. Ask specifically whether they use lapel mics, a dedicated audio recorder, or a combination. Clear vows and speeches are non-negotiable — make sure they have the equipment to deliver them.
4. What happens if something goes wrong on the day?
Equipment fails. Videographers get ill. Ask what their contingency plan is, whether they have a backup kit with them, and what the contract says if they’re unable to attend. A professional will have a clear answer. Vagueness here is a warning sign.
5. How do you back up the footage?
Your wedding footage should never exist in only one place. Ask when they back up, how many copies they keep, and how long they retain the footage after delivery. If you ever need a replacement copy further down the line, you’ll want to know there’s something to go back to.
6. What music will you use, and is it licensed?
This matters more than most couples realise. If a videographer uses unlicensed music — a commercial track they haven’t cleared rights for — your film can be muted or removed from any platform you try to share it on. Ask specifically whether their music library is fully licensed for commercial use. The answer should be an immediate yes.
7. How many revisions are included?
Most videographers expect to make some changes after the first edit. Check how many rounds of revisions are included in the price, what the process looks like, and whether additional changes beyond that incur extra cost. Get it in the contract.
8. What is your turnaround time?
Editing takes time, and a good videographer will have more than one wedding to edit at any given point. A realistic turnaround is typically eight to twelve weeks, though this varies. What you want to avoid is an open-ended answer with no committed timeline. Confirm it in writing.
9. Are you insured?
Non-negotiable. Public liability insurance is a basic professional requirement, and any reputable videographer will have it without hesitation. If the answer is unclear or evasive, walk away.
10. Have you filmed at my venue before?
Not essential, but useful. A videographer who knows your venue will already understand the light, the layout, and any restrictions the venue has on filming. If they haven’t been there before, that’s fine, but ask how they approach an unfamiliar venue and whether they plan to visit ahead of the day.

What questions should I ask a wedding videographer?
The most important ones cover what’s included in the package, how they record audio, what their contingency plan is if something goes wrong, whether their music is licensed, and what the turnaround time is. Always ask to watch a full wedding film rather than just a highlights reel before you book.
What should be included in a wedding videography package?
At minimum: a highlights film, uncut ceremony footage, and uncut speeches. Those are the three things couples most want to watch back. Confirm exactly what’s included before you sign anything.
How do wedding videographers record audio?
Professional videographers use dedicated audio equipment such as lapel microphones or separate audio recorders rather than relying on camera audio alone. This is particularly important for ceremonies in churches, marquees, or outdoor settings where ambient noise can affect quality.
How long does it take to receive a wedding film?
Typically eight to twelve weeks after the wedding, though this varies by videographer and workload. Confirm a committed turnaround time in writing before you book rather than relying on a verbal estimate.
Do wedding videographers need to be insured?
Yes. Public liability insurance is a basic professional requirement. Always confirm your videographer is insured before booking, and check that the level of cover is appropriate for your venue’s requirements.
